There’s always a fork in the road when it comes to desire and the choice is craving or aspiration. This is what determines whether one’s life is a struggle or if one is at ease.
Desire is an intrinsic part of being human, as a matter of fact we should probably be called human desirelings instead of beings. There are basically two forms of desire, desire to fulfill a selfish want (craving), or desire that arises from our heart to assist others solely for their benefit (aspiration). Although most desire is of the selfish variety because of the way many of us have been conditioned, a shift of perception can change this as the heart opens to naturally be of assistance to others wherever possible. Desire will have to be investigated to find these differences. You can’t really read a book on this or listen to talks, a study of oneself will have to be done to find this out.
There’s always a fork in the road when it comes to desire and the choice is craving or aspiration. Aspiration means breath and there’s an easiness to it. To be at ease in this life is to allow our motivations to arise when we’re relaxed instead of trying to force them. Craving on the other hand is just the opposite and there’s a certain tightness associated with it because of the attachment to the expectation of fulfilling a selfish desire. So we can sit in quiet and look at these two and see how they operate in our life.
Craving is a thirst, a thirst that creates suffering because of the tightness that occurs, this tightens has to happen, because of the selfishness of the desire. The more this craving is given into, the more suffering is created. This is because the nature of these cravings cause discomfort, physical, emotional, and in our thinking, this is our selfish thirst.
True aspiration comes from the depth of the heart and compassion and love are what arises when the mind is still. This is natural, it flows easily because this is when one is in harmony with life. No thought is needed here, it’s like the breath, it just occurs. So take heed when you come upon the fork in road and chose which desire is fulfilled, just know this, there’s always a fork in the road when it comes to desire and the choice is craving or aspiration. This is what determines whether one’s life is a struggle or if one is at ease.
