Conditioned Attachments

Tobacco products don’t cause cancer, using them does. Food doesn’t cause obesity, over eating does. As it is with anything, the attachment to the thing is what causes the suffering, not the thing itself.

I do not profess to understand what it feels like to be born into poverty or to be under the tyranny of some lunatic ruler, but I won’t apologize for having the life that I have been given, because I understand regardless if you come from Park Ave or from a park bench it doesn’t mean the suffering the Conditioned Mind causes is lessened or is any greater. It just means the circumstances of your life are different. You see prior to seven years ago, with life exactly the way I wanted it, I was at an emotional bottom, at the depths of despair. I could have been a millionaire or had no money whatsoever and it wouldn’t have mattered. If life, not social status, was measured on how much money one had, the rich would be the happiest people in the world, but as we all know this is not the case. As a matter of fact they may be the most miserable because what determines our suffering is our attachments. I have the life that I have, but if I had less that would be okay.

I don’t diminish the hardships that some people live with, they are real to them, but only because it is what they are attached to. It doesn’t mean life would be better if those hardships weren’t there, granted it would be different, but not necessarily better. Circumstances only matter to a mind that is conditioned. An attachment to poverty is no different than an attachment to being rich. Attachment is attachment. The thing attached to doesn’t cause suffering, the suffering comes from the attachment itself. Tobacco products don’t cause cancer, using them does. As it is with anything. Sugar isn’t a problem, consuming it is. You get the point. You can make all the excuses you want, but that’s all they are, excuses. Excuses to justify what we do and to have something to blame so we don’t have to look at ourselves. People are rioting and they blame the police, but the police aren’t at fault, people are rioting because of the conditioning that’s in place, the police are only an excuse.

Social status doesn’t separate people into the haves and have nots, the Conditioned Mind does. Life is equal to all regardless of the social status, but because of attachment, things are put into categories by our mind. We attach to our causes and create a reason for our existence. But it has been my experience that the true spiritual path only takes into account how still our mind becomes so we can be guided by Universal Love to do whatever it is that’s in front of us. Whatever it is that we attach to will take us away from this path, and it doesn’t matter whether you are from Park Ave or from a park bench.
